conversation amongst tweens

September 22, 2008

Two sixth graders, one male and one female, ride in the back of the momvan.  It is dusk and they are on the way to a Rite 13 teacher/parent/youth group meeting on a Friday night.  Chris Brown’s Kiss Kiss and Wall to Wall providie background music. The male’s mom is the driver, and she bops along to the music, and feigns disinterest in the tween’s conversation.

Jake: Why do you keep pointing me out to your friends like a million times in the hallway?

Hailey: Cuz, they wanna know who you are…

Jake: What, like a million times a day?

Hailey: Well…when I point you out they keep missing you, so… I have to keep pointing you out.

Jake: Why do they care who I am anyway?

Hailey: Well…cuz I told them I know you from Church School, and they wanted to see who you are, cuz like, they don’t get that Church School is so cool, and fun. You know – they think it’s stupid and gay. Like, why would you wanna go to Church School?

Jake: Yeah. Our church school is fun…not like that church. (Jake gestures out the window to the Roman Catholic church he used to go to, and where he attended CCD, as they pass it.) THAT church was NOT fun. Those people, they don’t know what they are missing.

Mom: Well..it’s just different.

Jake: Yeah, whatever…different like it’s not ANY fun.

Hailey: Seriously…if my friends understood how much fun we have together, and how cool everyone is, they’d all want to come to our church.

Jake: Yeah.

Mom hides the fact that she is smiling a HUGE smile to herself up in the driver’s seat, and makes no comment.

Woo hoo! Good to know that kids can actually have FUN at church. (We’ve got the same thing going on now that the Emperor is in Rite 13—he even goes on the weekends he’s with his dad.)

You know – they think it’s stupid and gay.

This is where you are a better mom than I am, because I’d have been on that girl like a duck on a junebug for that comment.

I know that jumping on kids for that sort of stuff is a bad idea, but I can’t seem to help it. I suspect that a few of the Emperor’s friends are permanently scarred…

Doxy…I know what you mean, but the overall tenor of their exchange was so good and positive, I just couldn’t moralize at them – it would have totally blown by the point that it was a spontaneous exchange between the two of them on their own terms.

I was so proud of them!
