WTF? Desmond Tutu & St. Thomas University

October 4, 2007

Hat tip to David H.

From Jewish Voice for Peace
Desmond Tutu barred from speaking at a Minnesota University. Click the link for details if you are unaware of what is going on here – basically, Tutu is being barred from speaking at St. Thomas University because his strong criticism of Israeli policies are being perceived as anti-semetic remarks, and the college wants to avoid scandal.

Dear everyone:

Please send a letter to the president of the University of St. Thomas urging him to reverse his decision to bar Archbishop Desmond Tutu from speaking at his university.

The Justice and Peace Studies program at St. Thomas had arranged for Tutu to speak on their campus this coming spring, but the university president, Father Dennis Dease, countermanded that decision and soon after removed the chair of the Justice and Peace program from her position (she has tenure, so she can’t be fired).

Archbishop Tutu has been the target of a slanderous campaign against him waged by the extremist group, the Zionist Organization of America because of his outspoken criticism of Israel’s harsh measures in its occupation of the Palestinian people. Many Jews agree with his criticism and many who do not still believe he has not only a right to be heard, but that his experience in fighting apartheid makes his an important voice on any social justice issue.

Far from being a favor to Jews, actions like this one increase anti-Semitism because they make it appear as if Jews oppose free speech. More importantly, free speech must be defended and promoted on this issue if Palestinians are ever to be free of occupation and if Israelis are ever to lead normal lives.

Please join me in urging Father Dease to change course by clicking on the link below.

Somebody with a bit more intelligence should take advantage of the open date in Tutu’s schedule.

If it was 10/22 we ask him to come meet us for Evensong, Dinner and a drink!

WTF is right. Many of my Jewish friends are sick to death of the attitude that all Jews must support everything the State of Israel does no matter what.

I could adjust the date if our Desmond can’t make it on the 22nd, or, better yet, we’ll just have another!

also heard that Tutu and others are going to take part in the Sudan crisis to help get it going in the peaceful direction. That would be wonderful.

Your local Jufi says: I support Israel the same way I support the U.S. And I certainly have no problem criticizing the U.S. when it fucks up. Israel has been run by its right wing for quite some time now, and it shows.

Personally, I’d love to hear Desmond Tutu. (And I’d love to have dinner with him, except I’d be too intimidated to eat or say anything.) 🙂

I agree John, how could Tutu be more “offensive” than Ann Coulter?

    Ugh.
