Book I’m listening to for Emerging Women:

Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert – this is the book for the July book discussion (I’m beind, as usual).

This book is blowing my socks off – she describes going through a divorce, how she came to that decision, what it was like to go through it. I’ve been weepy off and on listening to it.

She eventually takes a year to travel around the world: four months in Italy, India and Bali, searcing for healing, spirituality, and what she really wanted from life – looking for herself around the world.

If you haven’t had a chance to read this, I’d recommend it. She’s truthful – poignant, funny, brash. She reminds me a little bit of me, but smarter, wittier, more articulate. And way braver – and yet – just as broken.

I love her honesty about her grief, sorrow, melancholy, her use of medication. She personifies depression and loneliness – they hound her, follow her, talk to her.

She talks about how she was always with a man, and had no identity outside of a relationship to a man – a friend told her she came to resemble the men she was with – dress, mannerisms.  She had no idea what she would “look like” as herself. I can relate to this, in a big way.

I’m enjoying it immensely.

It’s the right book at the right time. Weird how that happens sometimes, isn’t it?

I finished it about a month ago. Talk about hitting me where I live!!

    Divorcing/divorced w/ bitter ex—check
    Professional writer—check
    Neurotic—check
    Spiritually questing—check
Gets squirrelly over having to sit in silence—check
    Inability/unwillingness to plan ahead—check

The big difference is that I don’t have a book contract that will let me take a year off to travel to exotic places and “find myself.”

    Rats.

I’m very interested in reading your thoughts on it Elizabeth+ – can’t wait to hear what you think abou t the “other” Elizabeth!

Gartenfische – I’m nearly through with it now, and I’m just thoroughly enjoying the whole thing. What’s cool about this audio book is that it’s actually read by Liz Gilbert – so you totally get her voice. Very enjoyable.
